Gordon Sumner, PhD, is the president of Veterans Moving Forward. Gordon is the founder of Gordon Sumner Consulting, a Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business and Native American Small Business providing professional consulting services focusing on developing sound business strategies for firms with a focus on Federal government actions, increasing the firms’ visibility to the Federal, state and local governments, large and small businesses, associations and non-profits. He provides project support for veteran-owned businesses, Guard and Reserve components, and Family and Employer support programs across the country. He is an Army Reserve Ambassador for the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Prior to establishing Gordon Sumner Consulting, Dr. Sumner served as the National Director for the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). As a presidential appointee and member of the Senior Executive Service he provided executive leadership to the largest volunteer organization within the Department of Defense comprised of over 5000 uniformed military, government civilians, defense contractors and volunteers, promoting cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component Service members and their civilian employers nationwide while assisting in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee’s military commitment.
Gordon currently serves as a Senior Fellow and Affiliate Faculty, George Mason University; a Council Member, Graduate Education Development Council, Auburn University; Scholar; and, the Board of Advisors, Office of Military Services, George Mason University. He is an Army Reserve Ambassador. He serves as President, Veterans Moving Forward, a nonprofit providing trained/certified therapy/service dogs to veterans with physical and/or mental health challenges at no cost. He is an Ambassador with the Yellow Ribbon Fund.
Gordon has received numerous civilian and military awards and decorations such as the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service, Commandant of the Coast Guard Distinguished Civilian Service Medal, the Army Legion of Merit (OLC), the Bronze Star Medal (V), the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal (3OLC), the Air Medal and the Joint Services Commendation Medal. He also holds the Army Master Aviator badge, the Master Parachutist badge and the Ranger Tab.
Lyn Sherlock is a member of the Board and the Fundraising Chair for Veterans Moving Forward. She is the CEO of L&R Sherlock Consultants and has previously served in executive positions leading both large, diverse organizations and smaller, high-performing teams addressing national security, policy, operations, training, and resource issues. Lyn transitioned from the US Air Force as a Brigadier General after a rewarding and demanding career.
She is currently an independent consultant providing her international and national security expertise to several companies seeking to gain federal business contracts in the National Capital Area and internationally. She previously served in senior positions in the Department of Defense including United States Transportation Command as its liaison to United States Central Command and United States Special Operations Command, and in Air Force International Affairs where she was responsible for leading the Air Force’s direct liaison with foreign government officials, US Government officials, and aerospace industry representatives to plan, negotiate, and execute security cooperation programs, particularly the sale of Air Force equipment, maintenance, logistics, training, and support services to foreign governments.
Lyn also served in the Department of State’s Bureau of Political Military Affairs as Director, Office of International Security Operations and Senior Military Representative to the Department of State. She commanded the Air Force’s largest Air Mobility Wing at Travis Air Force Base in California, deployed to Germany and Qatar commanding airlift and tanker units supporting Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom, was the Deputy Commander for the airdrop into northern Iraq at the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and served in the Combined Air Operations Center directing both U.S. and international coalition air mobility operations.
